Respond to the Bystander Effect!

  1. This was pretty disturbing as far as these stories go. Its scary to think how dependent we are on other people to do the right thing for us and it is a weakness that has become more and more prevelent in the modern world. With the amount of access we have to everybody all the time, we expect other people to be doing what is needed for us and few people feel the need to be a hero or get something done because they "know" that someone else must be doing it for them. Its not that they actually want to see these things done to other people its that we've been so exposed to violence that we almost expect it, and instead of standing up and defending the person the way we may have a hundred years ago, we flee or just wait it out to see what happens. Social expectations have changed andd so have our instincts.

  2. The bystander effect was pretty crazy, but it does seem to be accurate. I think no one takes any action when they see something like that happen because they just assume someone else wil do something about it. But then if everyone just assumes that someone else will take care of it, there can be bad results!

  3. It was a very interesting read, and really quite frightening. We may say that we would do something in a situation like this, but when you're actually there living it you would be surprised how quickly we ditch that thinking and run. Instincts are a funny think like that and it takes a special person to be able to overcome it.
